Make a small keep list together
Ask about drawings, photographs, saved projects, and other material the child values. A game icon does not tell you where its progress is stored, and a file visible in an app may not be part of the backup you normally use. Identify the important items and consult the app’s official instructions when needed. Keep private material within the household’s approved storage. Avoid uploading the entire device to an unfamiliar transfer service just because it promises an easier migration.
Verify the copy before removing the original
Open a few important exported or restored items on the destination device or account. Check that they are usable, not merely listed by filename. Confirm access to the accounts the child will continue using. If the destination is not ready, postpone handing over the old hardware rather than rushing the irreversible step. A successful backup notification is useful evidence, but it is not the same as confirming that the particular project or photo your child cares about can be opened.
Follow the exact transfer procedure
Use the manufacturer’s current checklist for the model and operating system, including any account or activation-lock requirements. Keep the buyer or recipient out of your signed-in workspace and never share a household password to help them finish setup. Verify the device reaches the appropriate fresh setup state before transfer, following the provider’s guidance. Remove the old device from household lists only when the transfer process calls for it. If something is unclear, resolve it before the device leaves your control.
