Use the publisher or creator’s information where available, and check that it matches the books you can access. Ask whether the child wants to understand the whole story or simply read one book a friend mentioned. Those purposes may lead to different starting choices.
Preview the entry point
Read the description and opening of the candidate volume. Look for whether it explains the situation or assumes knowledge of earlier events. If the child dislikes spoilers, avoid reading a detailed summary of every later book while deciding. You can ask a librarian for help locating the first relevant volume. Do not promise that starting in the middle will be confusing or effortless without looking at the actual work. Let the sample inform the decision.
Keep the commitment small
Borrow or buy one suitable volume within the family’s ordinary plan rather than treating the entire series as a necessary purchase. If the child enjoys it, decide on the next book later. They can stop midway through a series or take a break without owing the collection completion. If the desired volume is unavailable, choose another activity or book while waiting. The goal is a comfortable entry into a story, not keeping a shelf in perfect numerical order.
